I have had the opportunity to help family and friends over the years, in their various stages of looking for homes or purchasing homes. It was always rewarding, and I have often wished I could do it more often...
Now, it would seem, I can!
Let me start off by telling you what I am not...strange as that may be, I think it is important:
I am NOT here to sell you a house, ...or even a door for that matter!
I am NOT a realtor, a mortgage broker, a banker, a home inspector, a home builder / developer, or a lawyer.
I have dealt with all of these professionals, and had to learn enough about each of them to be good at home buying. Despite that, I have no intention of entering one of these necessary professions. I very much enjoy being just another client of these fine folks!
Let me introduce myself then, my name is Jeff Current, and as of April 2023 I am recently retired from being a Project Manager in the institutional construction industry. I managed many construction projects, mostly military and police type facilities, over the last 25 years. The highlight being a single project in the $100 million range, lasting just over 7 years, from design to completion.
Although my career may have helped in some small ways here and there, most of my experience in home buying comes from my own personal life. I was active in investing in real estate from 2004 until 2021, with a really good buddy of mine from college.
We bought single family and condominium type homes in both the US and Canada (one Canadian city and two major ones on the US). I have also bought two homes for my own family. We stayed in each for over 10 years, only changing as our needs evolved when our 3rd child was born. We are now looking for our third house for this new stage of life...but that is another story.
I have viewed thousands of listings, made hundreds of offers and viewed about as many properties, completed dozens of inspections, and signed tens of purchase agreements. I have had the opportunity to have dealt with many different realtors, home inspectors, lawyers, bankers and mortgage brokers in both countries. In addition, we had to fix-up just about everything we bought and hired many a contractor in each city. I met lots of good people along the way, and only a few at the opposite end of the scale.
We managed to keep our priorities in focus, which I think accounted for a big portion of our successes, and while we never made it "big", all our gains were very positive. Our mistakes were affordable, and most importantly, we never made the same one twice.
I came from an average family in an average city in Canada where I was raised, married, and started a family of my own. While I am average fella, I would say I have been lucky in having above average experiences in both my career, and of course home buying. I think I have bought a lot of homes for an average guy!
All those experiences enabled me to contribute to the well being of my family. I have only been too happy to share them with people I know, hopefully saving them the hassles I had to endure.
I am more than happy to share with you folks as well, what ever your goals... so you too...can Own The Door!!
Disclaimer:
My wife and family are of course special, and not average in any way! You might say awesomely exceptional! Without them at my side for the entirety of the journey so far, none of the pages here would be remotely possible! And that is no average thing!
Thank you so much to my wife Mélanie, my parents (now Grandpa and Nana), and my children for all their love and support!
With Love,
Jeff
